Dr T. Hema
is a Consultant General, Laparoscopic and Bariatric surgeon at Starcare
Hospital, Oman. She is a highly trained and qualified advanced
Laparoscopic gastrointestinal, Hernia and Bariatric surgeon with 25 years of experience to her credit, with additional interest, training and experience in complex, large, recurrent and incisional hernia repair, breast, endocrine and general surgical practice. She is known for her meticulousness, hard work and efficiency. She topped her Institute in Surgery at both the MBBS (1990) and
MS (1995) levels with awards from Mumbai University, with a very early keen
interest in endoscopy and Laparoscopic work and completed her thesis on
Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy for unconscious patients in 1994. She
then trained for gastrointestinal surgery, before being appointed lecturer on
merit at an 1800 bedded tertiary referral public teaching hospital King
Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM), in
Mumbai. She also gained her Diplomate National Board in Surgery from Armed
Forces Medical College (AFMC) Pune in 1996. In KEM, she has served the
community as a surgeon and postgraduate teacher for over 12 years, progressing
to Associate Professorship on merit, and headed a Surgical Unit, teaching,
training and guiding several generations of doctors and postgraduate
surgeons in training. She also gained tremendous expertise from treating several hundreds of cases in all her specialities. During this tenure, she gained her
SAGES certified training in basic and advanced laparoscopic surgery from
world-renowned Laparoscopic surgeon Dr Palanivelu at GEM hospital in 2003 and
2004. In addition, she also took special training and certification in breast
and endocrine surgery from the prestigious Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate
Institute (SGPGI), Lucknow in 2004. Owing to a keen interest in the treatment of the dual demons of
obesity and diabetes, she undertook an observer training for Minimally
Invasive Bariatric surgery in Cleveland Clinic Florida with the highly
respected Dr Raul Rosenthal. Subsequently, she was also the first Indian
surgeon to undergo a hands-on fellowship training in Bariatric/Metabolic
surgery with Dr Muffazal Lakdawala (Saifee Hospital) in Mumbai, where she
gained complete knowledge and experience in the safe conduct of various
bariatric procedures including pre and post-operative care. Later she moved
to Bangalore, where she worked at the prestigious JCI accredited Apollo
hospital as a senior consultant laparoscopic surgeon for 10 years, and in
Chennai before shifting to Oman. Another
major area of interest, training and expertise is Hernia repair, and
abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) for complex defects. She has constantly
endeavoured to keep herself continuously updated and accredited (SILS
training, robotic and laparoscopic colorectal training from Anam University/
Seoul in 2010, Duke University approved FIBC in 2017, AWR in 2017), in order
to provide the best current standard of care in her areas of interest. Her areas of interest are minimally invasive advanced
Gastrointestinal surgery including intestinal resection anastomosis,
fundoplication for reflux disease and hiatus hernia, gall bladder and
appendicular surgery, Bariatric procedures including sleeve gastrectomy roux
en Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass, intragastric balloon placement,
among others, various hernia repairs including component separation and TAR
techniques, flap repair of pilonidal sinus disease, among other things. She
is a member of several prestigious National
and International Professional Surgical Associations. |
Her extracurricular activities and interests are wide-ranging. She
has been a classical dancer, Carnatic Classical vocalist, a sportsperson with prizes
won at various levels, an avid reader of fiction, non-fiction and philosophy,
an amateur writer, sketcher, rangoli artist, trekker and budding wildlife
photographer.
